To the Artist in Search of Fame

To the artist in search of fame,
I know your struggle.
I am familiar with the decision to pursue validity,
And in return, unintentionally,
Turn away from your art.
I know the want and desire to make yourself known,
To the masses, the critics,
For the folk of the land are not enough.
I know that this path is one that’s dark;
It’s one that you walk alone and blindly.
I know the struggle that comes from this pursuit.

To the artist in search of fame,
Don’t forget your purpose.
Do not forget that you were chosen
To feel the trifles most intensely,
To feel emotions most deeply,
To feel the world most vastly.
Do not forget you were chosen
To ponder the intricacies.

To the artist in search of fame,
A pen and paper wasn’t enough
To express your sensations;
You were given a paintbrush, or pencil,
Or pastel instead.
You were given charcoal and clay;
Were given wire and wood.
Tools in your hand are how you speak.

To the artist in search of fame,
Focus on your past.
The past holds the reasons why
You are an artist,
And not a writer or liberator or politician.
You are an artist when the sun rises;
You are an artist in the deadly winters;
You are an artist during mental anguish;
You are an artist while eating;
You are an artist while sleeping;
You are an artist at all times.
You are an artist because you couldn’t be
Anything else.

To the artist in search of fame,
The cosmos denied you a different path,
But this path is a path only few can walk.
Only few can absorb the stimuli around them,
And craft aesthetics and commentary
In the shape of beautiful forms.
Only few can see the world as a collection
Of colors, lines, composition and repetition;
As space, contour, rhythm and balance.
Only a few can cope enough with their demons,
To transmit their eternal battles in abstraction.

To the artist in search of fame,
Do not create your art for fame.
Create because you have something to say,
And demons to vanquish.
Create because words are a collection of letters,
And ideas are true representations of meaning.

To the artist in search of fame,
I tell you fame will come.
Fame is but a side effect of good art.
Be not in search of fame
But in search of understanding.
Be in search of yourself;
You are an artist so you can be in search,
Of yourself.
